Lost for five hours

Hiking up and down steep, lonely mountain paths, with lots of forks in the trail and no signs to give even a hint of location, or direction. After reaching dead ends and retracing my steps too many times, I came upon a mother and daughter planting their field. They pointed me in the right direction and gave me a cup of cold, delicious water from the mountain stream flowing past their house. I'm happy to report that I haven't gotten sick yet.

The Pueblos Mancomunados is a cooperative of several small villages high in the mountains, about 1 1/2 hours from Oaxaca city, that promote Eco-tourism, hiking from village to village. The views of farms and fields on the mountainside below you, as well as far away mountains, are magnificent.

Tourism offices located in each village with friendly staff are open until 8 PM. Someone will bring a load of wood into the cabana room where you'll stay and will light a blazing fire. Plentiful, carefully prepared meals are available at nearby comedores.

Guides are available, if you choose, to make sure you are safe and don't get lost. In the villages, all the local people are very friendly and welcoming, giving the feeling that they really want you there.
